Food trip East of Helsinki

24.04.2024

This roadtrip is for foodies! We have specially picked visiting points full of beautiful countryside sceneries, farmer’s markets, factory stores and other top picks for any food lover. So hop in the car and start your engine!

Our trip starts in Helsinki, capital of Finland. To avoid downtown’s rush hours and road works, pick your car at Avis Herttoniemi location where you can head straight east and reach your first destination in no time. Our Herttoniemi location is easy to reach by metro train.

The first stop is only 10 km away and isn’t it a sweet one! At Fazer Experience Visitor Centre, you can visit the legendary Finnish chocolate and sweets factory (guided tours in the factory require pre-booking) or treat yourself with delicacies at Fazer Experience Shop.

Head to north on highway E4 and turn to small town of Sipoo. In Nikkilä village, roundabouts are decorated with different animal sculptures. What might be the story behind all those animals? Can you spot all the species?

In Nikkilä, stop at the honeyfarm Kotikylän Unelman hunajatila. Here you can buy Finnish artisan bee products and natural cosmetics. There’s also a 24/7 available self-service kiosk for honey products.

Take road 1531 and head towards Porvoo. In Yli-Vekkoski village by a river, you can find one of the hidden pearls of the region: a traditional grain mill called Vekkoski-Anttilan mylly. The mill is hard to find online and they are open to visitors only on Saturdays at 10-12 am, but believe us: this 1930’s building and delicious products for direct sales are worth a visit. There’s also a summer café.

Keep on driving towards Porvoo and follow signs to the smokery Lihasavustamo Lindroos at Tyysteri village. Its home smoked sausages, meats, steaks and cold cuts gather customers from near and far.

When you arrive in Porvoo, one of Finland’s oldest towns with picturesque wooden houses, do not miss the local chocolate factory called Brunberg. They have a small store in the Old Town, which is worth visiting, but a true sweet-tooth heads to their factory store some 3 km further. Here you can watch artisan chocolate being made behind the windows.

Continue your journey to the east to Bosgård Organic Farm that grows Charolais beef cattle and offers organic BBQ food, free nature trails, and a chance to get acquainted with a real working farm. There is also a good restaurant and some meeting facilities on the farm.

Now it is time to head back to Helsinki via highway E18. If you are still hungry – at least for more experiences – and have some extra time, consider visiting some interesting places south of the highway. Our best picks are Gumbostrand Konst & Form that combines art and food, plus next to it a brewery shop Gumbostrandin panimomyymälä. There are also a family-run bakery and café N’avetta and Alhberg's garden that grows and sells different herbs, vegetables and plants. After these visits, you have driven a full circle and end up back in Helsinki.
