History calling – charming summer destinations in Finland

There are lots of great summer destinations in Finland that offer something for every taste: for culture-lovers, activity seekers and those traveling with children. We are now talking about old mills and ironwork communities that have grown into artisan villages and must-see destinations. Pick your favorites here!

1. Verla paper mill, Kouvola

The Verla Mill Museum has been named a Unesco World Heritage site due to its status as a unique, culturally and historically significant example of an industrial settlement from the turn of the 20th century.  Visitors can explore the history and forest-themed trails of the Verla World Heritage site on their own, as well as view the site’s prehistoric rock paintings. The Verla Mill Museum, consisting of the groundwood and board mill, can be visited only as part of a guided tour. Local artisans display their wares in the small shops and workshops of the museum site. 2. Högfors ironworks, Karkkila

Högfors ironworks village in Karkkila, west of Helsinki, remains yet a less-known destination, but this is soon to change, thanks to its active role. Established in 1820’s, Högfors blast furnace played a vital role in the history of Finnish iron and steel production. 3. Möhkö ironworks, Ilomantsi

This destination takes us to the eastern-most village of Finland, Möhkö in Ilomantsi town. The whole village was estanblished around the ironworks business. Old buildings ooze the atmosphere of the past times. Lemmenpolku path leads you to the surges of Möhkönkoski rapids, popular for recreational fishing. The ruins of blast furnace, massive waterwheel and unique, restored canals tell the stories of Möhkö ironworks. 4. Ahlström ironworks, Noormarkku

Ahlström ironworks has been owned by the Ahlström family since 1870, and it has been built up by during several generations to be one of Finland’s largest and most spectacular historic industrial areas. The historic industrial area offers a wide range of activities, from museum exhibitions to canoe trips. The area also hosts a sawmill museum and Villa Mairea, a unique masterpiece by Finland’s most famous architect Alvar Aalto and his wife Aino. 5. Strömfors ironworks, Loviisa

Strömfors Ironworks - one of the best-preserved ironworks communities in Finland, with roots dating back to the 17th century, is located about 1 hour 20 min drive from Helsinki to the east. Strömfors Ironworks offers its visitors an original and unforgettable environment and memorable moments. The area's varied restaurants offer delicious local food and produce, and small boutiques offer delightful takeaways.
