The Forest Civilization: Top Destinations for Nature Lovers in Southeastern Finland

03.07.2024

In Finland, the European country with the most forests, you will find pure, diverse nature and remarkable natural landscapes. This guide, composed in cooperation with Visit Porvoo and South East Finland, will lead you to the best natural destinations in Southeastern Finland.

Finland is the world's top destination for nature tourists, according to the publisher of tourist guides Lonely Planet (2019). Our country owes this ranking to its natural landscapes, numerous nature reserves, environmental friendliness, and diversity of nature.

And nature is abundant in Finland! Finland is the most forested country in Europe; a whopping 73% of its total area is covered by forests, and inland waters account for another 10%. Finland has a total of 40 national parks.

Furthermore, Finland is the least densely populated country in Europe. If all Finns were evenly distributed throughout the country, there would be only 17.64 inhabitants per square kilometer. More precisely: 17 here and 18 there, well hidden in spruce and pine forests.

So, it's quiet here – not just because of our proverbial laconicism.

Relaxing in the Forest for Just 10 Minutes

We Finns love nature: the scent of the coniferous forest and the feeling of soft moss under our feet. In summer, we hike and pick berries; in autumn, we go mushroom hunting, and in winter, we ski.

Studies have shown that just 10 minutes in nature are enough to reduce stress and lift mood. Living close to nature may be one reason why Finns have topped the World Happiness Report's satisfaction list.

Time spent in nature also lowers blood pressure and respiratory rate and calms the pulse. The best environment for body regeneration is untouched nature with bodies of water. Finland, with its thousand lakes and a coastline of 314,604 kilometers, offers plenty of such landscapes.

"No other environment has such positive effects on people's well-being," says yoga instructor Anu Tuomaala from Porvoo. In her yoga class "Deep Forest Yoga", she combines ancient yoga tradition with the effects of nature.

"Humanity has spent 99.7% of its history in the forest. Therefore, a stay in the forest, in this environment so familiar to us since ancient times, has such a soothing effect on us. Nature has such a universal effect on all people, regardless of their nationality," Tuomaala believes.

Award-winning parks, dense forests, Finland's largest arboretum – Southeastern Finland's green gems

In Finland, you don't have to go far to reach a forest. Even in larger cities, there are forests and even nature reserves.

A versatile national urban park runs through the center of Porvoo, extending approximately 10 kilometers from the historic old town through the river delta to the archipelago coast. There are also plenty of nature trails: on the Ekudden peninsula, covered with oaks and linden trees, in Virvik with its caves and wetlands, and on the green island of Sikosaari, which is easily accessible on foot from the center of Porvoo.

In Kotka, the park capital of Finland, there are a staggering 1,400 hectares of green areas that have gained popularity both domestically and internationally. The Sapokka Water Park, known for its waterfall, the Katariina Seaside Park built on the site of the old oil harbor, the River Park of Karhula, and the Lehmusbulevardi ("Linden Boulevard") have all been awarded the Environmental Construction Prize.

If you enjoy hiking, you should visit Repovesi National Park near Kouvola: an area with high cliffs, magnificent forests, and dozens of lakes and ponds. You can reach the national park, among other ways, with the raft ferry Ketunlossi ("Fox Ferry"), which you have to pull across the sea strait yourself, or via the pedestrian bridge at Lapinsalmi, which runs at a height of 12 meters. In Repovesi National Park, you can hike, climb, and paddle and stay overnight in a tent or shelter.

On the way to the national park, it's worth making a stop at the Mustila Arboretum, the oldest and largest of its kind in Finland.

You can also find an impressive forest complex in Sipoo, just around a 15-minute drive from Helsinki. The 23-square-kilometer Sipoonkorpi National Park winds through the southern Finnish cultural landscape and offers deep, dark forests as well as excellent terrain for berry picking and mushroom hunting.

Finland's Archipelago Coast is a Natural Wonder

The archipelago coast of Southeastern Finland is a natural wonder that must be seen. The gently undulating sea and the rocks smoothed by the surf form a landscape close to the hearts of the Finns. As you pass through the archipelago out into the open sea, the landscape becomes increasingly barren and impressive. The archipelago off Porvoo, among other places, inspired Tove Jansson, the creator of the Moomin characters.

You can experience a completely different atmosphere on the Kymijoki River. In the roaring rapids, you can go rafting, paddling, and sports fishing, or you can board a boat that will take you on a tour along the river to the archipelago coast. There are also beautiful hiking and cycling trails in the area.
